In the wake of USADA changing its marijuana policy for those on the Ultimate Fighting Championship’s roster, the UFC has decided to duke it out with any and all competition within the cannabis industry.
Prior to the dramatic shift in the government agency’s stance, countless fighters were getting sidelined with suspensions due to marijuana metabolites found in their systems. As the number of athletes collecting violations swelled for seeking benefits from the plant-based medicine, a modification of the rules was long overdue, and the MMA community welcomed USADA’s decision.
Fortunately, state athletic commissions, such as California’s, with reputations of considerable red tape have also relaxed the negative connotation if someone tests positive for marijuana.
Although it’s not a forgone conclusion that every commission will view cannabis use the same, things definitely seem to be taking root, branching out, and budding a new mindset about alternative remedies for mixed martial artists in their training and recovery. The UFC—with its high-profile collection of prizefighters, both past and present, touting the plant’s therapeutic properties—decided to make a run toward the top of the marijuana business, unveiling their own line of products under the name: Unbelievably Fire Cannabis.
In the initial line of flower, edibles, and pre-rolls, the popularized figures featured include: Nick and Nate Diaz, Sean O’Malley, Anthony Johnson, Kevin Holland, Herb Dean, and Jamahal Hill.
