“Such an incredible show!” Robert responded over his shoulder, therein realizing it was Laruby and catching the whiskey fumes pouring from his exhaust.
Laruby wanted to chat, but Robert wanted to begin traveling the three hours of road between him and home.

Robert tried every trick possible to not be lulled to sleep by the highway’s lines—open windows, blare the radio, count the landmarks leading home like breadcrumbs.
Relief washed over him as he pulled into the driveway.
