Flash Fiction: The Lucky Gloves

It was Jake’s favorite day—fight day!

Upon entering the arena, however, the twinkle in his eye dimmed; he had forgotten his gloves—the same pair that hadn’t let him down in his past ten bouts—at home.

When Jake’s coach heard this, he hunted down a replacement. The local sports store only had XLs, which Jake’s hands swam in. 

The padding turned punches into pillows, nor could he grip anything for submissions.

Somehow, he squeaked out a resounding decision from the judges. From then on, Jake let go of superstition, but he always kept his gloves by his side.
