Six-Sentence Story: Step In the Circle

The battle line was drawn—three-hundred sixty degrees of pain.

Government officials across the country set a ban on mixed martial arts, and police were ordered to fine, even arrest, anyone found to be participating in a cage fight: promoters, coaches, fighters, fans—everyone! Eventually, the idea of a cage inside an arena with a roaring crowd disappeared altogether; the sport went underground, back to its roots.

Locations were shared in private group chats on social media, and no location was ever used more than once. Every so often, a gathering was shut down by the authorities, but that didn’t sway the movement’s swell.

One warrior would challenge another to share the circle; nobody ever declined because, otherwise, you’d be outcasted from the secret society.
