For this week’s Song Lyric Sunday, writers were tasked with unwrapping a song with one of the given words, in either the title or the lyrics: birthday, gift, cake, party, surprise. The walkout song of Tony “El Cucuy” Ferguson, “The Party Has Just Begun” by DJ Ultrabright, is a perfect bow on the present of this challenge.
Ferguson (25-3) hasn’t suffered defeat since 2013 and currently rides a twelve-fight win-streak, so it comes as no shock that he was next in line to challenge for the UFC’s Lightweight Title. Although the pandemic circumventing the globe has been, to say the least, eye-opening, Ferguson’s attempt to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov (28-0) for the belt was cancelled four times previous to their upcoming date on April 18, 2020—UFC 249—so fans weren’t completely surprised this matchup, which has been rightfully labeled “cursed,” was cancelled again. Ferguson’s fighting style and persona is unique, in that: every time he steps into the Octagon or posts something online, it resembles the moment when you walk into a room, remove your dark sunglasses, and everyone yells, “Surprise!”
